Don’t Give Up! Why You Should Keep Studying English

Video transcript

Hi, it’s Alfredo. For language learning, motivation is extremely important. Without motivation, there will be no progress. Some of you have been trying to learn English for a long time. Months ago or years ago, you thought that by now, you would be fluent. You may be tired; you may be frustrated; you may have lost a lot of your motivation. Today, I want to tell you, don’t give up. Don’t quit!

I’m excited to present another part of my interview with Matthew Weathers, an English teacher in Asia. In the first part of the interview, Matthew and I talked about getting the confidence to talk with a native English speaker. As you watch this video, write down the reasons that Matthew and I give for not giving up. Watch the entire video, because at the end, I have a question for you to answer.

Interview

Alfredo: Many of these English learners have spent years studying English. And it may be that there at the point that they’re just frustrated. They’re perhaps tired of studying English. They’ve been doing it all their lives, or as much of their lives and they can remember. And so the motivation might get lower and lower. What do you recommend for someone who needs to be reminded about why they’re studying English? What can help to increase their motivation?

Matthew: For students–and both of us have been students in the past, and we realized a long hard process of going to class, of studying, of working hard–sometimes it’s easy to get lost in the details of learning and keep our focus off of the end goal.

1. Learning English for a Job

And I would encourage my students with learning English that one day they will need to stop being a student and to join the workforce in whatever country that may be. Usually, that will be in China for my students who are Chinese. But many of them desire to go abroad or to work in an international company. And so even English is a very useful and valuable tool for them to find a job. I know today studying grammar is not very fun, but tomorrow speaking English on the job is very beneficial.

Alfredo: Do you have any other suggestions for someone to increase his or her motivation for learning English?

2. Learning English for Relationships

Matthew: I did mention about jobs and how learning English will help you usually find a better job, whether in your native country or abroad, but learning English also helps you to expand your friendships and your relationships. I have many friends who are Chinese, but if they did not know English and I did not know a little bit of Chinese, we could not be friends very easily. But since they have learned English relatively well, we can be friends. And if I need something or if they need something, we can communicate, and we’re able to help one another. And with a student who knows English, when they help me or if they help another native English speaker, who does not know Chinese very well, that gives them a big feeling of satisfaction and joy in helping other people.

So I would say that learning English is good not only to have a job but also to help other people in whatever field or in whatever location you are.

3. Learning English for Pleasure

Alfredo: Yeah, and I think that there’s a difference between internal motivation and external motivation. A lot of times when we do something for a job or we do something for some kind of reward, some kind of external reward like a pay increase or a better job, that might not actually be as motivating as something that’s coming from internal motivation. We do it because we want it, we see the value of it, we love it, and it just becomes a passion for us.

Why Are You Learning English?

In this part of the interview, you heard Matthew and I give some reasons for not giving up, reasons for not quitting.

Why are you learning English?

  • Are you learning English because it’s part of your academics?
  • Because you need it for your current job or your future job?
  • Because you want to improve relationships or make new relationships?
  • Or are you learning English because you just enjoy learning English? Is learning the English language a hobby for you?

Add a comment below this video, and give us your motivation, your main reason for wanting to improve your English skills. I look forward to reading your comment.

English for me was a real happiness and in a special period of time English for me was a real trouble and catastrophe , which cost me 11 years in jail, ELEVEN years I was put in POWs , because I speak English. It is a tragic story in my life. First of all I took this language as a source to make my livings from 1987 up to 1991 when Iraq Invaded Kuwait. I was working as a guide for the international media fro all over the world. suddenly I found myself in the north fighting the Kurds but the later captured all the Iraqi army and sent them to Iran. The government put us in pow camps and because I speak English they put me in a cell alone for 13 months, totally alone. I did not see any person, the sky, the sun, any bird, any car, anything at all. I was sitting alone in the corner of my cell thinking and thinking alone. They thought that I was an intelligence because I speak English….woow, I suffered a lot, I cried alone thinking of my family all the time. After those 13 months alone, they brought me back to live with the Iraqi POWs. I stayed 11 years in those camps. I memorized hundreds of English words, I wrote so many short stories on the cigarettes- small papers , but alas I could not bring them with me because I was writing those stories secretly . I was an English teacher – simple English for so many prisoners of war there in my camp. But all those lessons or teaching those poor people were secretly because  doing such thing is forbidden. They did not let the red cross to see us , so we were completely lost. If i want to talk about every thing I need hundreds of pages. I wrote a book in Arabic which I named” when the unknown soldier speaks” I do hope that I will translate it in English someday, to let the whole world knows something about my suffering there. After I returned home, I started to work with this language a s an interpreter in one of the companies and now I am happy because I am following your instructions to make my language  stronger. Bless all of you because you are giving us something precious.

  • Jamison

Hi Alfredo! I’m Jamison, from Brazil. I’ve been studying english for over six months, and I’ve come to know how frustrating it can be. I can’t attend to normal classes ’cause they’re not cheap, so I started to learn it by myself, which is much more complicated than I first thought, but it’s worth it when I realise how good I’m getting. My biggest enemy right now is my lack of confidence when it comes to speaking english, but I’m working on it. Now answering your question, learning english for me is  just about the  joy of it, it’s more than just a hobby it’s more like a passion. My goal is to become fluent before the next world cup, that you must be aware, will have place here in Brazil, so I wanna be able to talk with the tourists that’ll come here.So that’s it, I hope you’ll keep sending more cool videos like that one, I  like them.Bye.
P.S: Sorry about any mistakes I’ve made.

  • Phuoc

I learn English because of two reasons. First of all, I learn English because I enjoy it. While learning English, I have a lot of fun. For example, I feel happy when I can understand an English song or understand what people mean in films. Also, learning English refresh my mind when I have a chance to travel to a different world, I mean the world where people speak English. But fun is not the onl;y reason that urge me to learn English. Another reason is that learning English can improve my income. I would like to be an English teacher as my part time job. I have been learning English for a long time, and now I would like to transfer my passion to young children. In short,  I learn English because it help me both in business and entertainment.

  • Aripin Giman

listening on your discussion was very interesting and it can be improved of my ability to understanding English language, particularly in hearing or listening problem. I can read English book, news paper, or other source in writing for about 75% can be understood, but when it comes to conversation even in a small sentences from native English it was very difficult to understand. I decided to learn English because I love languages. I also study Spanish and I’m starting to study french and Mandarin. It’s not easy. Each language has its challenges as pronunciation, grammar etc. But if you persue your goals you might get there. English has lots of benefits and it is spoken  around all of the world. You might need English for a good job, for traveling or having fun as listening a music or watching any movie. I’ve been here in U.S for 3 months.  I know that I need to approach people and express myself.  So I need to speak well, get more vocabulary and keep working on it. The more you interact with the language you get more confidence and consequently you feel more motivated as you see the results of your efforts. Learning process takes time. Be patient! Don’t blame yourself.  Look at the future and believe that you will speak English fluently.
    DON’T GIVE UP!

    Hi Alfredo
    Are you ok?

Great video, I did enjoy it.
I am learning English because it´s part of my job.
I work with information architecture for web and I need to read a lot of text on this subject, most of it on the web and in English.
I also want to improve relationships with English native people.
Beside of that I enjoy learning that idiom, I love it.
But I am going to say you a thing that you won´t believe…
I am without motivation to keep learning English.
I am tired and sometimes I feel fed up of learning the idiom.
    I´ll try Matthew Weathers´advice.
I´ll look for expand my relationship with English native people in US, Canada and Great Britain using Skype.
I am sure I will recover the lost time without studying that second language for me.If you have another suggestion, please, let me know.
    Thanks.

    Best regards
